Lincoln's Early Speeches

Read the excerpts from Lincoln's "House Divided," Cooper Union, and First Inaugural Address. Write a paragraph that answers these three questions:

1. What connections can you make between the three speeches?

2. What is Lincoln's position on slavery?

3. How did Lincoln appeal to the southern states in his First Inaugural Address?

1)All the specches talk about how slaves should be treated equality to any man kind.
"Let all the guaranties those fathers gave it, be, not grudgingly, but fully and fairly maintained."
2)He thinks that slavery is an evil ambition
"as an evil not to be extended, but to be tolerated and protected only because of and so far as is actual presence among us makes that toleration and protection a necessity"
3)He didnt want slavery to expand and he tried to avoid the civil war.
"In his inaugural address, Lincoln tried to avoid civil war and reassure the southern states that he had never advocated the removal of slavery where it existed, but rather was opposed only to the expansion of slavery."

The three speeches are the same because they both talk about slavey and argument. Lincoln disagrees with slavey because of what he said 'I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free'. The main idea of the speech was that the north and the south have to get along with each other because they are the same nation.

All three speeches have to do with giving slaves there natural rights. Let all the guaranties those fathers gave it, be, not grudgingly, but fully and fairly maintained. This means all the rights the Declaration of independence gave to the americans african americans should get these rights too."Lincoln is not opposing slavery but he does not want it to spread either." as an evil not to be extended, but to be tolerated "

1)That what the three speeches have in common is slavery should not be expanded and should be stopped. For example "as an evil not to extended, but to be tolerated".

2)Lincoln's position on slavery is to not let slavery expand anymore.

3)What Lincoln appealed was to stop the expansion of slavery in the First Inaugural Address.

i belive this goverment cannot have alot slaves and that they should have just only slave states or just free states because they could not combine.
If they combine they will cause a lot of problems and the people did not want to do that anymore. (arrest the further spread of it). permanently half slave and half free.that meant that they have to stay slave .

The three speeches that lincoln made have in common is the argument between the south and the north of the conflict of slavery. lincoln position on slavery is not to spread slavery but not to ban slavery in the states that already have slavery, but on the other hand he believed that african americans have the same rights as the whites the rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness those rights are written in the declaration of independence. In those three speeches we can make one connection he wanted a better country . For example in the "house divided" speech he said 'A house divided against itself cannot stand.' That means that the nation can not be seperated either all states are free or all states are slave states. Lincoln didnt want to completely end slavery but he didnt want it to sprread onto th other states . lincoln was trying to stop the civil war he tried tostop slavery from expanding.

That all the speeches came down to the speech that lincoln made witch was "A house divided itself cannot stand". They must work together to get a direct vote to what they are saying.By their speeches they have all in common about slavery wether it is freedom or slaves.
they use the same strategies for their speeches by giving a well example or a good phrase like "right is might".Thats why they are all alike. Lincoln's position on slavery is that even blacks have the same right as all men not just property. Some states were appealing to having a free state and other were appealing to having a slave state. Most states did not agree to all others from their opinion.

As to what Lincoln had said in the Address at the Cooper Institute "As those fathers marked it, so let it be again marked, as an evil not to be extended, but to be tolerated....." What Lincoln meant by this was that he didn't want to take slavery away he just wanted to stop the expansion of it from continuing on toward the western states.
Lincoln appealed to the Southern States in First Inaugural Address was by saying that if the Civil War started it would have been the South's fault. "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine is the momentous issue of civil war."

In each of these speeches, dating from 1858 as Lincoln was a candidate for the Senate, and 1861 when Lincoln first assumes the Presidency just before the first shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Lincoln stresses the importance of keeping the Union together. He says it in his "House Divided" speech -- "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved" -- again at the Cooper Union, when he refers to the slavery compromises that permitted the ratification of the Constitution -- "Let all who believe that 'our fathers, who framed the Government under which we live, understood this question just as well, and even better, than we do now,' speak as they spoke, and act as they acted upon it" -- and finally and most famously in his First Inaugural, when he tells the South that he will not act directly against slavery, and urges them not to "break our bonds of affection."

Lincoln Cooper Union speech was perhaps the best example of his reasoning about slavery. He refers to slavery as an evil, and that is consistent with all of his other writings on the subject. While Lincoln said many different things under different circumstances about racial equality (most notably in the debates with Douglas), he was never ambiguous in his opposition to slavery's expansion. While he was prepared, out of necessity, to tolerate slavery, he would not consent to its expansion.

Lincoln appeals to the South in his first Inaugural Address in both political and religious approaches, well as directly emotional arguments. He repeats his long standing promises not to end slavery by direct action in the states where it was established -- " The government will not assail you" -- and goes on to remind the South that if war is to start, Lincoln will not be the one firing the first shot. Religiously, he speaks of his solemn oath to defend the Constitution, an oath stronger than the South's beliefs, that while genuinely held, are not "registered in Heaven." Finally, he appeals to the South's patriotism, and shared beliefs with the Northern states, which date back to the Revolution.
