Women's Rights Movement

Read about the early women's rights movement by going to the National Park Service website for the M'Clintock House, where many of the women and men who fought for equal rights met.  In which aspects of life in the early 19th century were women's rights restricted? How did people justify those restrictions?

In which aspects of life in the early 19th century were womens rights restricted?

Law, religion, and tradition combined to limit severely the rights of and opportunities for American women before the Civil War. Nowhere in the country could they vote; in many states, once married they could not sign contracts, own property (even if they had inherited it), or control their own earnings. The husband received custody of children after a divorce, no matter what his actions during marriage had been

1. Women were limited from lots of rights. they couldnt vote in no country. in alot of countries they could not sign a contract, own property or control their their own earnings after they got married. After they got a divorced from their husband he would keep the children no matter how he acted. Most schools that were their for them to would limit them.

2. Because they thought that women were to weak and not smart enough to do what men were doing and know right from wrong. Also they thought if women started to do what men were doing everything would start getting wierd and the "natural odrer would be messed up.

1.voting, once married could not sign contracts, own property, or control their own earnings, and if they divorce their husband the husband keeps the kids no matter what, they could not get jobs, or go to college.

2.they justified it by saying women were more submissive, gentle, pious, and nurturing to men which made them perfect for the domestic sphere raising children, keeping the home and serving their husbands. they were also considered moral, supported by the fact that women were more likely to convert during religous revivals and attempts to break this natural order and it would damage both people who tried it and society in general.

Their husband got custody of the children if divorced, despite any actions he did during the marriage. They were unable to vote anywhere in the country.

2. Most Americans of both genders accepted, and supported, those conditions. They cited Biblical passages that a wife should be subject to her husband. ~Womens rights were restricted. They were not allowed to vote, to get an education, and not hold custody of children even if the male was a bad father. Family law did not protect women; women were beaten by their husbands and it was okay according to law.
~Some men proclaim that women had no brain. Which meant they were treated as a utility to their needs and they had no voice to speak up. And the thought that if they spoke up and did things they would take over, overrule the men and attempt to control men. The men thought women had to be a stay at home wife.

Women were not given the same rights ss men. They could not vote or keep money that was given to them by parents or by their job. They got payed half of what a man was payed. The people would agree with that by saying that women are more moral and women are to take care of the children.

1. The right that were restricted were that once a woman were married they could not own property, the husbands got custody of their children after a divorce, and even though women could have certain jobs they only got half the pay as men and then it wasn't even theirs to own, they could not vote either and they couldn't sign any contract becuase they were married.

The women in the 19th century were treated poorly. Once they were married they couldn't own property, sign contracts, or handle the money they got from work. Women never really had good career choices. The oppoperunities were limited to women. Education was a problem for girls. The percentage of women going to college was little compared to the percentage of boys going to college.

One way people justified that was that women would soon dominate instead of the men. Another reason why people did stuff like that is that women are too weak and couldn't handle stuff like politics. They also thought that women are too religious.

1. Women were not allowed to vote, sign contracts, own property, or have power over threir earnings.
After a divorce, men claimed custody of their children, no matter what the reason.

2. They claimed that women were more gentle, nurturing than men, leaving them poorly suited for the rough worlds of politics and business. Those same characteristics makes them perfect for raising children, keeping the home, and serving their husbands' needs. Attempts to upset this "natural" order, advocates of this view claimed, would damage both the people who tried it and society in general.
