Andersonville

For soldiers that became prisoners of war, life was harsh. Confederate prisoners in the North suffered because supplies were often deliberately withheld as revenge for the South's actions in causing the Civil War. For Union prisoners in Southern camps, food, shelter and medical care was in short supply for them as well as the citizens of the Confederacy.

Start this assignment by reading the link to "Life as a Prisoner."

After you have learned about being a prisoner, click on the link to Andersonville, the most notorious prison camp of the Civil War, and work with your team to answer the following questions:
1. Why was Andersonville chosen to the the site of a prison camp?
2. Why did the prison have such a high mortality rate?
3. Who was responsible for the conditions and deaths at Andersonville?
4. "Wirz" was the last casualty of Andersonville." Should Captain Wirz, the officer in charge of the prison,  have been hanged for the deaths that occurred under his administration? Why or why not?

1.Why was Andersonville chosen to the the site of a prison camp?
Union prisoners in Richmond, Virginia, to a location away from the war. A site was needed where the prisoners could be guarded by fewer men, there would be less chance of military raids to free them, and food would be more abundant.

I enjoyed reading your replies, especially to questions 3 and 4. The situation in Andersonville is really about what it means to be in charge and responsible as a leader. If you are in charge, is everything that happens your fault?

1. Clearly the maps show that it is away from the fighting, and close to rail lines and roads for transport, and near water for cooking and cleaning for thousands of prisoners.
2. The overcrowding of the prisoners led to the spread of disease. Also, there was the effects of poor nutrition and lack of shelter, as well as the brutal treatment of prisoners by guards.
3. & 4. Although Captain Wirz was held accountable by the Court, there is some doubt about the fairness of his sentence. There was considerable pressure from veteran's organizations to make Wirz a scapegoat for the tragedy. In addition, the decision of General Grant to stop prisoner exchanges led directly to the overcrowding at the camp. Several students noted that General Sherman's actions also were part of the cause for what happened. To some extent, the Confederate government that held these prisoners had responsibility as well. And there is no doubt that Wirz, himself, acted improperly and brutally in several cases. I think that it can safely be said that it was a combination of factors that led to the deaths at Andersonville.

For those interested, I would recommend that you check out the Union prison camps during the war. Even though the North did not have a shortage of supplies, conditions in those camps was almost as bad as at Andersonville. Research it, and find out why.
