Federalist Paper No. 10
In November 1787, Number 10 in a series called the "Federalist Papers" was written in support of the Constitution. James Madison describes the way federalism will overcome disagreements within society:
"A landed interest, a manufacturing interest, a mercantile [trading] interest, a money interest, with many lesser interests, grow up of necessity in civilized nations, and divides into different classes, moved by different views. The regulation of these interests is the principal task of modern government.
The federal Constitution forms a happy combination; the great interests, being referred to the national [central] government, and the local interests to the state governments. The influence of local leaders may start a flame within their own states, but will be unable to spread through the other states"
Questions:
1. In your own words, what was the problem facing the government?
2. How does Madison think federalism will prevent disagreements?
3. Do you agree or disagree with Madison, and why?

1.The problem facing the government was that they only cared about their own states interest and never about the interest for the United States and everyone.
2.Federalism will prevent disagreements because the probems will stay in the state and not spread.
3.I agree because he wanted good things for everyone and thought that the Constitution had interest for everyone.

2)the government should organize the interests into various sections.
3)I agree with Madison because everyone should be assigned their own level of interests.

1.The problem that James Madison thought the Government faced were INTERESTS. He thought that people were involved in their personal life more than the whole United States itself.

3. I guess I agree because there are no bad ideas just bad concepts. I guess he did have a point in some way.
p.6 Micahel N. , Stephanny S. The pronlems facing the government are that the interests are different and are divided and they were thinking of farming back then and they are thinking of home owners. Madison thinks federalism will prevent these disagreements because it is a combination of all the interests and not of one specific interest. so everyone will be satisfied. We agree with Madison because everybody has to have there intersests not just one single state.

He think federalism will prevent disagreement because it will create a law that will benifit all the states not just one state like farming in one state one crop will grow and in another state a diffrent one and they will make a law that will benifit all farmers 3.I agree because federalism will stop the arguing by making a law that will benifit all the states

The problem that was facing the government was that they did not know how to manage the interests. If the manufacturing interest made things and the mercantile interest traded the things the manufacturers made, but never were successful, the manufacturers would be unhappy and they wasted all that time for nothing.
Madison thinks federalism will prevent disagreements because he said that the Constitution, the federal government, would do a better job for the people. It would regulate our interests so that way we wouldn't disagree. He thinks it would solve the problem by making different citizen's interests equal.
I agree with Madison because the federal government has prevented disputes when it comes to our interests. Federalism can solve the problem because the states themselves don't have to take care of them, the central government helps them solve problems with their interests.

Madison was always worried that "interests" would ruin our government since they would be concerned about what is good for them, and not for the country as a whole. Today we often call these "special interests."
Madison felt that federalism was the answer to that problem, since the "interests" would have power at the state level on issues that concerned them, but at the national level, the government would deal with what is best for all Americans.
In 2009, we seem to have "interests" at both the federal and state level. It takes a great leader to do what is right, and not listen to "interests" who are only concerned about their own interests.
