Washington's Rules of Civility

George Washington wrote his "Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior" when he was a teenager as an assignment in school, probably to practice his handwriting. Although he didn't invent these rules, respect and proper behavior were important to him, and he tried to live by these rules throughout his life and career as a general of the army and President of the United States.

Your assignment is to put 3 of the rules into your own words, and explain why following them might have helped Washington as a military and political leader. Be sure to "copy-paste" the text of the rule to your response.

If a British spy told George Washington that the British were comming through the north when they are actually coming from the south could have been a mistake unchangeable. But by not trusting all of what you here, George Washington coud have been very precautious.

The 51rst rule of civility means to wear clean and tidy clothes. Not be close to anything that can dirty your clothes so you can have a good impression on people on how you are and act with others.

60th. Be not immodest in urging your Freinds to Discover a Secret.
I think this probably helped him because it told him not to get into other people's buisness.

67th Detract not from others neither be excessive in Commanding.
It told him not to be bossy and to treat others the way you want to be treated.

62d.Speak not of doleful Things in a Time of Mirth or at the Table; Speak not of Melancholy Things as Death and Wounds, and if others Mention them Change if you can the Discourse tell not your Dreams, but to your intimate Friend.

Tells him to only speak at the right time and to the right person. Also tells him if he is part of bad talk as in drama, to try and change the disscusion.

23d When you see a Crime punished, you may be inwardly Pleased; but always shew Pity to the Suffering Offender.

28th If any one come to Speak to you while you are are Sitting Stand up tho he be your Inferiour, and when you Present Seats let it be to every one according to his Degree.

29th When you meet with one of Greater Quality than yourself, Stop, and retire especially if it be at a Door or any Straight place to give way for him to Pass.
1.If you see someone getting punished, you might be happy but always show that you feel bad

2.If someone is below you still show him respect and if someone is higher than you show him that you respect him

3.If someone has more power than you, back up and show him respect

1. George Washington might be pleased about punishing a criminal but never shows that

2.Even though George Washington is president he still shows respect to everybody and people like him for that

3George Washington will still back up and let other people pass even though there below him and people respect him because of that

I think that it's amazing to have a primary source like the "Rules of Civility" -- George Washington spent his entire life trying to do the right thing, and even though he was only copying something for a school assignment, I can picture a young George Washington writing and thinking about how important respect and responsibility were.

My favorite is #13, which basically says that if you notice something wrong about someone (like he or she has a stain on his/her shirt), tell that person privately so it's not embarrassing. But if someone loudly tells you about a stain on your shirt, thank anyway, since he/she was just trying to help.

By the way, for those of you that were stumped by #55, I was too, and I emailed the experts at Mount Vernon back in 2007. They didn't know either.
