Andersonville was built in 1864 to hold 10,000 Union prisoners of war. By the time the camp was closed over 14 months later, over 45,000 prisoners were living there in squalid conditions, without enough food, water, shelter, or medical attention. Over 13,000 Union prisoners of war died at Andersonville. Captain Henry Wirz, the commandant at Andersonville, was held responsible and hanged as a war criminal. Andersonville is now a memorial that honors prisoners of war from all U.S. wars.
Although Captain Wirz was punished for what happened at Andersonville, there are those who believe that he was a victim as well as the prisoners of war who suffered and died. So now it's your turn. Think about what it means to be responsible for something. Who was really responsible for what happened at Andersonville?

we believe that all 13,000 deaths at Andersonville should rest on the shoulders of Jefferson Davis. we believe that because he was the president of the south and should have been aware of the ghastly living conditions that the soliders lived in. he should have been responsible for getting the union soliders food, clean water, and a decent place to live. even if they were the enemy, they were still human and should have been treated like one, even the black soliders.
Tania C. Stephany L. p2
The cival war casualties in Andersonville was caused by everyone. Captin Wirz was responsible for the care of everyone within Andersonville, but was unable to for there were no supplies left in the South.Jefferson Davis played a big role with the casualties within the walls of Andersonville. He was resopnsible for suppling what prisoners needed to stay alive. The Southerners caused some death because the contributed to the war(sttarted it) and had death come upon Andersonville without direct violence.General Grant had the power to trade back Southern prisoners in return for Northern prisoners, but chose not to because Southers would treat Northern prisoners as slaves.General Sherman lead the armies. He destroyed everything in his path, causing low supplies.Therefor ,everyone played their part in the deaths of the war leaving no one to blame for the casualties in Andersonville.

There is technically no one to blame for the terrible prison at Andersonville. It was just another terrible part of the cruel Civil War. Cause if you think about it, everyone took part in the death of 13,000 men, and you can't punish everyone. Like, Capt. Wirz was in charge of the prison, but he really did try to get more food and supplies for his prisoners, but president Davis wouldn't give it to him. And he couldn't because he barely had enough food for his soldiers, because general Sherman was destroying crops in the South. He did that to end the war faster, meanwhile Grant didn't trade for Union soldiers until the South stopped discriminationg against their black soldiers. So it was just a chain of events that led up to the terrible camp beacause of everyone. So i think Wirz shouldn't have been hanged and let it be.

We beleive that the one person who should take responsability for all of the deaths at the camp at Andersonville is Jefferson Davis. This is because he was the president of the confederates and had the authority and sould have taken advantage of this. He would have acted smart and should have thought of a way to produce food for his soldiers, i mean how could you say that there is just not any food at all, thats pretty ridiculous.

We think that Commander Wirz was not the one responsible for the 13,000 casualties in Andersonville. The ones who we think are responsible are the Southerners. They were the ones who started the war in the first place. When the North asked them if they stopped mistreating their prisoners the North would trade with them, the South refused so that's when General Sherman decided to destroy all the farmlands in the South and they killed most of their animals.

According to our knowledge no one could be blamed for the catastrophy of Andersonville. Even though Captain Henrey Wirz was responsible of Andersonville he couldn't control everything and he asked for food and supplies but the South had none. The South couldn't be blammed because as General Sherman marched through the South he would burn every crop and all the supplies that he could find. So that the Confederate army would starve. The North had something to do with it too. If they would of traded some prisoners many wouldn't have of died.So in conclusion no one person is blammed with full responsibility, everyone was to blame for what happened in Andersonville.

In our opinion, General Sherman &&' General Grant are responsible for what happened in Andersonville. General Sherman was responsible because he made sure that the south could not grow food by burning crops. General Grant is also responsible because he seiged the south so food can not go in nor out. Most people thought Comander Wirz from the confederate army was responsible but he was not. He requested more supplies for the camp but he was denied the supplies because the south had very little food. Then people say "Blame Jefferson Davis! He didnt want to feed our soilders." But in reality he could barely feed his own. Then people say to blame all Southerners, but they had no blame. They had so little food, they started eating shoes.

We blame General Sherman because he believed in "total war" so he destroyed all the farmland in the south. With the farms destroyed, Captin Wirz couldn't get the food he needs and the soldiers die but it's not Wirz's fault. Wirz was blamed because he's the commander but, we believe it's Sherman's fault.

The person who should be blamed for Andersonville is Jefferson Davis and the southern people. Jefferson should be blamed because he was the president of the Confederate Government. It was his responsibility to bring supplies for the prisoners. Other people should be blamed like the southern people. The Southerners were the ones who started the war because they weren't happy that the Union was going to make slavery illegal. On the other hand, people may say that just because they live in the south, doesn't mean that the all people agree with having slavery. There might be people who are innocent people. We think most southern people should be blamed though.

What happened at Andersonville? A constantly debated subject. Many people were blamed but mainly it was the Southerners. They refused to supply Wirz with supplies and once the south captured black soldiers they were mistreated. After that the North decided to end prisoner exchange, in a way the South made all prisoners of war suffer. Thanks to the Southern people the Civil War happened. If the south let their slaves free there wouldn't have been a war. But since they didn't let their slaves free this war had to occur for a free or slave nation. In the end the Civil War was a battle of injustice and human rights.

I think Captain Henry Wirz because he was incharge of the prisoners. It was his responsibilaty to take care of the prison, like feeding them and many other responsibilaties. So since Captain Henry Wirz was incharge of all the prisoners so thats why he is and should be blamed. He made those prisoners suffer to death because their was evidence that the prisoners were starved and were like walking corpse. As you can see he was a terrible person to put in charge to run the prison. As a result he was hanged for the 13000 deaths at Andersonville.

We think it's gernal Grant that's responsible for what happened at Andersonville. We think this because he didn't want to exchange soldiers with South. For the reason that they were treating black soldier unfairly. General Grant should of excepted this and still exchange captured soldier because the South was still killing black soldiers and treating them unfairly. General Grant could of saved a lot of soldier if he would of just kept exchanging captured soldiers.

In our opinion, we believe that everyone had a part in the Andersonville deaths. The prisoners of war were starving due to the fact that they were provided with little water and food.Everyone is to blame because each person could of gave something as donation to the camp or closed it down. Also, Captain Wirz was the person to blame because he was a war criminal that was selfish. Therefore,we think that Captain Wirz was the man to blame.
P.2 Katherine P. and Monica O.
We think that the ones responsible for what happened at Andersonville were Jefferson Davis and all the Southern people. We think this because the Southern states seceded from the Union because they didn't want to end slavery, which was the main cause of the Civil War. If the South hadn't seceded, the Union would have stayed together, the war wouldn't have happened, and all of those soldiers wouldn't have died. It could have also been Davis's fault because he was the president of the Confederate states and he encouraged the South to secede from the Union. So he could be the one to blame its technically his fault that the Southern States seceded which caused the Civil War.

i think it was captain wirz and jefferson davis because general grant tried making a deal . to treat the black soliders and white soliders the same . jefferson davis denied the deal and thats got captain wirz to be the leader of the andersonville prisonier camp. he also knew that one day the were going to run out of supplies but it was mostly jefferson davis fault . also he couldnt keep over 10,000 and captain wirz had over 32,000 prisoniers in his camp .

If he needed food, medicine, and supplies he should of sent a solider to go get them. If they had no medicine he should of used herbs. There are many people who think that Captain Henry was rsponsible for what happened in Andersonville. In my opinion, everyone was responsible for what occured.First of all, Captain Henry had to make sure that everyone had enough supplies. Which he didn't. Then when he finally realized that there were no supplies left.
Then he asked the Confederate army for more supplies but they didin't have enough money, so they couldn't do anyhting about it.Then the Confederate army asked the Southren people for money. They didn't have money, so they couldn't purchase the supplies needed. So basically everyone was responsible for this terrible catastrophe. There is no specific person who we should blame for this event. Everyone didn't really give the camp enough supplies to survive.
The person who is responsible for what happen to Andersonville is no one. I think no one because everyone used the supplies that captain Henry Wirz ordered them to get him.
