Border States: Which side would you choose?

Kentucky was one of the border states that had divided loyalties for both the Union and Confederate causes. Although Kentucky eventually sided with the Union, many Kentuckians fought on the Rebel side.

What follows are proclamations made by the commanders of the Union and Confederate forces in Kentucky. Read both quotes, and then summarize at least two main ideas from each quote. Which one do you think is more persuasive, and why?

[The flag of the United States] has streamed in triumph at the mast-head of our ships, and in many a bloody field has cheered the American armies on to victory. It has waved in every breeze on land and upon the sea, and in the strong hands of our fathers who bore it aloft, it has never, lo, never dishonored. Around it have clustered the dearest hopes of every friend of human liberty in every clime, and who doubts the last shriek of freedom will rend the skies, if it shall fall forever....[t]hough others may hate and curse the land that gave them birth, the brave and loyal sons of Kentucky will never strike with parricidal hands the State that has nutured them.
--Colonel Curren Pope, Commander, 7th Kentucky Infantry

To the People of Southeastern Kentucky:
The brigade I have the honor to command is here for no purpose of war upon Kentuckians, but to repel those Northern hordes who, with arms in their hands, are attempting the subjugation of a sister Southern State.... Their government has laid heavy taxes on you to carry on this unnatural war, one object of which is openly avowed to be to set at liberty your slaves, and the ensuing steps in which will be to put arms in their hands and give them political and social equality with yourselves.

The honor of your wives and daughters, your past renown, and the fair name of your posterity forbid that you should strike for Lincoln and the abolition of slavery against those struggling for the rights and independence of your kindred race.

Strike with us for independence and the preservation of your property, and those Northern invaders of your soil will soon be driven across the Ohio.

--General Felix Zollicoffer, Confederate Army

THE MOST PRESWASIVE WAS THE COLONEL CURREN POPE ,COMANDER,7TH KENTUKY INFANTRY . I THINK THIS WAS THE BETTER ONE WAS THATAMERICAN ARMIES WON ON VICTORY. THAT BRAVE AND LOYAL SONS OF KENTUKY WERE ON STRIKE .STATE THAT HAS NURTURED THEM.

1.) We agree with the first comander because he gave good examples and we liked his quotes. The second comander was wrong is what we thought.

1. The two main ideas are to have the honor to control is here for no purpose of war upon Kentuckians. The other main idea was about the honor of your daughters & wifes to half of your fame.
2. We say the one of the daughters& wifes is more persuasive beacause we think it shows alot, about what they earn and what they receive.

1. The fathers passed it down to us to win every battle and that now we are fighting with our own people. The parents are the unite states and the sons are the states.

2. The people should not come to kentucky if they aren't living their because it influence's the decision of kentucky becoming free or a slave state. Also that the US shouldn't tax for war and that africa americans should have equal rights.

1. Colonel pope was saying that many states has fought with the united states but in each war every one celibrated the glory of the war that ended wit a flag the united states flag. he also said that kentucky will never fight with the u.s. it will always treat the u.s. like a parent an respect the u.s.

2: general felix is saying that he is happy to command the soldries an hes blaming the north for heavy taxes an hes blaming abraham lincoln an the abolitionist an he saying to drive the northerns out of kentucky too ohio

we think the northerners had a better reason because it is true that the u.s. made them an are like parents too the u.s.

1.) For quote number 1 Colonel Corren Pope is saying that Kentucky will become loyal to the US they do not want a war.

2.)For quote number 2 what general Felix Zollicoffer
is saying they will not have a war. For Kentucky to become free and have independence and abolish slaves.

3.)I think between the two quotes number 2 is more persuasive because its saying war is not the answer that the US is loyal and well give them independence.

Q#2:I think that what they are want is to convince us to go for there side and that they will reward us but that f we don't that they will kill us or like hurt us or some thing like that

[qoute#1] the flag represents life, liberty , and persude of happiness.if kentucky leaves the union will break and everything they worked for will break .

#2 every slave wants life, liberty, and, the persude of happiness.and they want to honor there family with he property they had before it was taken away

I Think that both are right but if lincoln takes away slavery the south could leave .so slaves should have the same rights.

The union had to address the south because slavery was the main factor.Freedom was important because many states did not have slavery.I would not allow slavery to be in any state because it wouldnt be fair to do someone elses work or job.

1) Colonel Curren Pope is saying if the states leave there will be no union and hes putting it as the states are the children and the union is the parents and and if the children kill the parents it would be parricidal.

2)General Felix Zollicoffer was trying to scare the slave owners by saying if kentucky leaves the union everyone will be equal and if everyones equal, the slaves would have just as much power as the slave owners and they'd have to do their own work since they can't take a person that has as much equalitys freedom.

2. The South wants to get rid of the Northerners that are trying to rid them of their property, slaves, and also give them political and social equality. Also, the Kentuckians should protect their property and the abolition of slavery.

The first quote was about saying that the U.S gave birth to them. He is also saying that the us flag has gone through alot and so they shouldn't lave the union.

the second quote was about them trying to convince them to leave by saying the there "sister" states or the non-slave states are trying to attack them.they are also trying to get them to strike with them to become independent.

We think the Union had a much better method to pursade them because they proved the point that they had been born in the U.S, which shows that i they want to defend there fights the should join the union.

2. General Felix said that the North has problems and he states them as wrong doing. They use the North in a mean way.

Curren Pope:
1) He talks about the United States' flag and the way it was created. It was created to symbolize the union of all or states who fought together.

2.) They said that because of that, they could not tear away from the union because of it. Because they had been through so much with the union.

M. Albert said...

Col. Pope, the Union commander in Kentucky, calls on Kentuckians to think about patriotism, their love of their country and their heritage, in making their decision. Gen. Zollicoffer calls on their fears of losing their slaves for Kentuckians to join the Confederacy.
It seems to me that when we make choices based on fear, they never seem to work out. I would go with Col. Pope's idea that the Union represented liberty and hope, even if the Union wasn't perfect.
