How democratic was Andrew Jackson?

Andrew Jackson was one of the most controversial people in the history of the United States. He was the hero of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, a slaveowner, an orphan who went from very poor beginnings to gain great wealth, a supporter of Indian Removal and expanding the vote to many more average Americans. He was twice elected President of the United States, and many historians say that he strengthened the office of the Presidency.

But how democratic was he? Was he more of an autocrat or democrat? Should we celebrate him, or be embarrassed by him?

Jackson had many sides to him.He was Democratic in his selfish ways, but he used his own definition towards Democracy. The majority of the people who wanted something would get it because that was his idea of democracy. In the Indian Removal,Jackson said that Indians should volunteer to move into a new land but had the rights to stay if they followed the laws of the state. This idea was democratic until the point of passing the law of Indian Removal Act.Jackson was still democratic but he was following the wishes of the majority of people. Some states, like Georgia, wanted the land for gold and cotton farming.Georgia and other states were the "people".Jackson did what they wanted this might have past democracy in other definition but to Jackson's it was still a part of democracy. We should celebrate him,for even if he did some horrible things,he wanted the majority of the people happy.

Andrew Jackson was very democratic in our eyes because he wanted a government not only for the people but by the people. He also thought that The Second Bank of The United States was evil (like Dr.Doofenshmirtz). He got Florida for the United States from Spain. He led the U.S. to victory at the battle of New Orleans. He was against nullification because he said that he was not going to destroy the country he helped build. He also did the Indian Removal Act in 1830 that act was both negative and positive in some ways. It was negative because it made him look like a Native American hater, but it was positive because in a way by moving them west they got more land and we're away from white settlers.

We think that Andrew Jackson was very democratic and deserves to be celebrated. He wanted all people to rule, not just rich people. He did many things that affected our country. Some good and some bad. For example, he forced the Native American Indians west of the Mississippi river on the Trail of Tears. And he thought the bank of the United States was evil and wrong. Some good things that he did were that he defeated the Spaniards and made Spanish Florida part of the United States. He lead the United States to victory in the Battle Of New Orleans against the British, which at the time had the most powerful army of all. He also replaced all the Federalists with Democrats. Most of his actions helped our nation, so he deserves to be celebrated as one of our nations biggest heroes.

Jackson was very Democratic. He believed in what the people thought, he gave protection to his people. He thought that U.S Bank was for selfish purposes. Education was key to success into having a good job. Andrew Jackson was a good man because he wanted to teach good to a poor Indian orphan. The only problem that Jackson had was a bad temper. He would capture runaways, burn villages, and destroy crops. The word democratic is defined in Jackson's way. Meaning to say democratic is a strong word that Jackson believed in. Nullification was good for the North and bad for the South. This is bad because not all states were balanced. Therefore, we think that Jackson was a very Democratic person.

In our opinion Andrew Jackson should be loved and appreciated for what he did for our country. He is democratic in his own defenition. He manipulated his ideas so the people would agree with him. Most of the time he did what the people wanted or at least the majority. Jackson supported the Indian Removal and Nullification, even though others were against it (which wasn't the majority). He was a good man who wanted good for the people. That is why he was against the Second Bank of the United States. Andrew Jackson believed it had to muvh power and was created for selfish reasons. He aslo supported the Spoil System. Jackson believed anyone had the potential to do any job, which was good ,but he missed the part in which they needed certain education. A quote that supports are opinion in which we believed he was a good man is " Lyncoya is the only one of his family left ....he ought to be taken care of, and I snd him home to you to adopt him as one of our family. Tell him to be a good boy, read his books, and obey you in all things. "( Andrew Jackson 's letter to Rachel, 1813). Andrew Jackson was a good man who heard the people and should be celebrated.

In our opinion, Andrew Jackson wasn't a democratic person and he shouldn't be celebrated. First of all, Andrew Jackson says that everyone must follow the laws if not whoever doesn't follow, then they will be hanged. We think this punishement is too extreme for the people. We don't agree with Andrew's decision. Next, Andrew Jackson decided to move indian tribes west of the Mississippi River because the states wanted land, and the indians are weak and dying out. ''Some Indian tribes are extinct, and others were surrounded by whites, and doomed to weakness and decay...I suggest setting apart land west of the Mississippi (Document B).'' That idea wasn't right because the Indians were suffering a lot in leaving their homes by force for the whites. As equally important, Jackson supported the Spoils System. The Spoils System was a bad system for people. The Spoils System was about giving government jobs to political backers, which wasn't fair. This idea was bad for people because now they wouldn't have a job because it was taken away. In summation, we believe that Jackson wasn't a democratic person because he had very unfair decisions.

Jackson was democratic in some ways and in other ways not so much. He was democratic because he followed common people's ideas for government. He loved the middle class and down. He had democratic spoil system which is basic jobs for men. He also adopted a native american kid. On the other hand he did an act called The Indian Removal. The Indian removal act moved Indians to the west and took there land. But we think he was more democratic.

Andrew Jackson was a democratic president. He eliminated the bank to give the common people more power and crippling the power of wealthy aristcrats since they were controlling the bank. The Indian Removal act helped the Americans expand in territory. Democratically, he gave what the people wanted even if it went against the natives needs. Jackson thoght that nullification was the right that citizens can seperate from the Usa as long as they see fit.

We think Andrew Jackson was very democratic when he was president and we should celebrate him. Its because he was for the people. He hated the bank of America and wanted to get rid of it because the rich seem to overpower the poor people. He said " The present bank of the United States is almost a monopoly... the rich and powerful bend the acts of the government for their own selfish purposes." (Andrew Jackson, 1832). Also the fact he supported the spoils system also shows he was very democratic. He wanted to hire people government jobs because they were in his party even though they had no experience. Lastly, he moved the Indians away because the Indians told him to( Andrew Jackson, 1829). This shows he's democratic because he followed what the people said. In conclusion, Jackson was very democratic, was for the people, and usually do what they tell him.

He was also a good man because he knew what was right for most of the people. We also no he was democratic becase the people relected his for presiednt. In our opinion, we should celebrate Andrew Jackson. We are all humans and we all make mistakes.
During his presidency he made decisions that in one way helped the country and at times hurt it. For example one of his positive things that he did was try and keep our country together. " Say to my friends in South Carolina....., I will hang the first man engaged in such treason from the first tree that I can reach ....T he laws must be preserved." Andrew Jackson did not want to see his country fall apart. Our founding fathers worked hard to put our country. We also think that he is very democratic.

Andrew jackson was very democratic, when it came to the people of the united states and himself. he gave the people what they wanted and thy loved him for it. we believe that the things he did were wrong and atrocious.for example the indian removal had to be one of jacksons worst acts during his presidency. in 1829 he stated " the indians are surronded by whites and doomed to weakness and decay." so he decided to forcefully move them west of the mississipp for their own "protection." we believe jackson should have had a boundry or limit to how democratic he can be aswell as power. we think that if the people were against the indian removal act that jackson would still go through with the lplan of moveing the indians west, just because he approved of it he wouldnt care about what the people wanted. we believe aswell that jacksons conspiracies about the u.s. bank were wrong. andrew jackson believed the back was to powerfull . no one was ever elected, and it was ran by the wealthy people. which he didnt very much like. our opinion is that the u.s. bank was a very good idea, the rich would take out a loan investesd in a buisnee and hire common people to run. not only would the rich benifit but aswell as the poor. so in conclusion we think andrew jackson was democratis for all the wrong reasons.

In my opinion, Andrew Jackson made history in the U.S. One quote that explains why he is a democrat is "Say to my friends in South Carolina that if a single drop of blood shall be shed opposing the government, I will hang the first man engaged in such treason from the first tree I can reach... The laws must be preserved." He was a great man because he tried to preserve the laws he made. The bad thing is that jackson gave more rights to the rich then to the poor. Another bad thing he did was the indian removal act. A good thing is that he said "The duties of all public offices are so plain and simple that [all] men of intelligence are qualified for their performance.... No individual has appointment or continuance in office is a matter of right."

Andrew Jackson wasnt really democratic he was more autocratic. Even though he listened to the people on Indian Removal Act but he took the indians rights away. He also stopped banking becuase he disliked rich people and created jealousy between the poor and the bank. He also said that the states should do want they want. The last and final reason was beacuse he showed no mercy as a king or a dictator. He disliked the bank because they took money from him before. He also had bin a harsh person to the Indians even though he had an adopted Indian son of his own. No, could question him or he would count that as treason and he would hang that person.

Andrew Jackson was making the poor jealous of the rich. Jackson said that anyone could do any job if they wanted to that, just because someone says that you can't do a job doesn't mean that you can't do it. Jackson also gave his friend a job and his friend stole $1,222,705,09 from him and Jackson was mortified.

Andrew Jackson definition for him about democracy is that all branches of the government must follow the wishes of the people . I disagree with Andrew Jackson and his decisions for example he seeks to inflame the rich against the poor . He always have jealousy against the main one the government (Senator Daniel Webster). Last thing Andrew Jackson wanned to apoint the Samuel Swartwout as a tax collector for New York , I really do disagree on the Ideas that Andrew Jackson had planned to do .

Andrew Jackson , knows that the bank is ruled by rich people . Rich people who not voted on . They only care about themselves . Andrew Jackson is putting rich people against poor people - he is making poor people jealous of rich people . "Sows the seeds of jealous against the government" . (Senator Daniel Webster , 1832) So I disagree with Andrew Jackson's ideas because , he's making the poor get jealous of the rich people , because the poor has less power and rich has alot of power . Was Andrew Jackson democratic? In my own words I don't think so. He said," All branches of the government must follow the wishes of the people". Its his definition of democracy. What happened when the Indian removal act took place 1829. He didn't care about the Indian's wishes, which were to keep there land. Instead Jackson suggested setting apart land west of Mississippi.. for the tribe to occupy. And if they do stay in there land they will be subjected to state laws.
In issue #2 which set place in 1832. ''President Jackson seeks to inflame the rich against the poor. He is making the poor jealous of the rich.
Issue #3 happened 1829. "The duties of all public offices are so plain & simple that (all) men of intelligence are qualified for there performance..." President Andrew Jackson was very democratic. One reason why he was democratic is because of nullification. Nullification was when Andrew Jackson wanted to bring back tariff and wanted the south to pay, South Carolina and Calhoun. The south did not want to pay they said that they had a right to nullify, to not obey the law or leave the country. Andrew Jackson said no way they have to pay and if they leave that is called treason and Andrew Jackson will hang the person that is commanding this. Thats when Henry Clay came in and had a Deal, that the south would pay for 10 years and after they wont have to pay anymore. Andrew Jackson and the south both agreed.

Andrew Jackson was very democratic, his definition of it was, "All branches of government must follow the wishes of the people." He was more of a democrat because he was for the people. For example, he said that Indian tribes were dying out so he wanted to move them to the west of the Mississippi River. That shows he cares about people because he wanted to move them some where else so they wouldn't die out. Next, his definition also said something about him being a democrat because, it says, " All branches of government must follow the wishes of the people." That's also an example because he thinks his people should live with rules they want. Finally, Jackson thought rich and powerful people shouldn't take advantage of their power, so he cares equally for all people. Therefore, he thinks they should all be treated the same. How democratic was Andrew Jackson?
Andrew Jackson was a democratic. To us he was considered democratic because he was a man of the people. Maybe to some indians they believed he was one of the worst , because of the indian removal act. The indian removal act was basically a law that made it legal for the president to move tribes west , although it wasn't such a great thing he promised the indians the land west of the mississippi river. " The Pledge of The US has been given by congress that the country destined for the residence of the people shall be forever secured and guaranteed to them ...." (- History Of US page.127) The Spoil system was something jackson used. He Would say if you supported his campaign you would get a job in his cabinet because he believed anyone could have any type of job. Andrew Jackson was democratic. The first issue was that he not only cared about himself but for others to. Jackson helped the Indians by giving them all the land west of the Mississippi River."They all thought the indians would be safe there, and could live in peace."(History f Us) The second issue that proves that Jackson is democratic is that he gave people jobs. If people voted for him, he would be nice in return and give them a job." A Civil Service Commision, established in 1871, has helped create a core of professional government workers." The third issue that proves Jackson is democratic is that he said every state should have their own reasonable amount of power. That way it wont go back to the old ways of the Articles of Confederation. Even though many people did not like Andrew Jackson I think he was democratic and he was also a good president.

Andrew Jackson is an autocratic because he is not a man of the people and he did not listen too them.

According to Andrew Jackson's defenition of democracy, he was very democratic.
For example one quote from Jackson was "The duties of all public offices are so plain and simple, that all men of intelligence are qualified for their performence".(Andrew Jackson, 1829). By that he ment to give equal opportunity to all men of the United States.
Another example that show Jacson was democratic was this quote "Our government emanated from the people of the US, acting as seperate states. Can a majority take away the rights of a state? Can a state be threatened with violence and injustice?" (John C. Calhoun, 1832) He meant that all states deserve power and respect by the people and government.
Another example is from this quote, " Lyncoya is the only one in his family left... he ought to be taken care of, and I send him home to you to adopt as one of our family"... (Andrew Jackson's letter to Rachel, 1813) This shows that he wants all people to have a good life and be taken care of. In conclusion, I think Jackson is a very democratic man.

Andrew Jackson, according to his definition of democracy, was very democratic. He was a bit of both, an autocrat and democrat. He didn't listen to the supreme court when he vetoed the bank of the United States. He listened to the people, and did what they wanted most of the time. He proposed the Indian Removal Act to Congress. This is what the people wanted, they wanted land to grow more cotton, make more money, and get more slaves. He said that the rich were running the banks and giving loans to the rich. He knew this was not fair to the poor people. "The present bank of the United States is almost a monopoly...power is in the hands of a few men irresponsive to the people...the rich and powerful too often bend the axe of government to theirself purposes." He thought that ordinary people could have public jobs. No individual had the right of keeping a job just because they worked their a long time, someone else could do that job just as well. He would protect the U.S. from traiters. He said he would hang the first person he sees doing treason on the nearest tree he sees. We should celebrate him, not be embarrased by him.

He was more than a democrat than an autocrat. We should celebrate him. We think this because eventhough he did do some bad things that made him seem like an autocrat but more in general he was more of a democrat. This is because he stood up to the south. he said"'I will hang the first man engaged in such treason from the first tree I can see"'. He wanted to enfore the law. He thought that if anybody disobeyed the law its treason. And that if they did he would hang them. he wanted to enforce the law. He thought that anks were bad becauses they were not elected and he believed the rich were running the bank and only care about themselves.

Andrew Jackson was very democratic because he thought that evryone should have the right to work in the public office. This quote explains whyhe was democratic becausethe government is following the peoples whishes. ANother reason we think hes democratic is because he followed the rules of the constistution and he cared about the peoples wishes. This quote explains that the government does not obey the laws then they are engaged to such treason. Jackson is very democratic because instead of kicking the indians , he tried to help them. This quote explains that if they stay they will have to obey US laws.

Andrew Jackson was very democratic . Andrew Jackson is democratic because he thinks about how non-elected people are running the bank . the evidence was that he said ''the rich are running the bank, they are not elected, and they only care about themselves .'' another reason why i think he is democratic was the indian removal . this issue was about andrew jackson running the indians out of their land into land reserved for them . this prooves that maybe he wasnt being very democratic with the indians but he was democratic with what his people said because he listened to his people who wanted the indian removal . so it wasnt his word over the indians it was the word of the people . also , its not like if he killed all the indians or ran them out and declared it was land he actually told them that they were going to settle in that land but it was voluntary if they wanted to move but to beware of the danger they might be in when georgia moves in .

Good afternoon!

I'm James Yasko, the Director of Education at The Hermitage. Your responses were all very interesting, and it's clear that you put quite a lot of thought (I also appreciate the use of primary sources in your responses) into this exercise.

One thing to remember is that Jackson was incredibly democratic...when it suited his purpose. In other cases, he could be considered more republican. I don't mean that in the traditional labels of the two major political parties.

If you think about the difference between a democracy and a republic, true democracy is where the will of the majority of the people is carried out. A republic is where you elect someone to act in your best interests. To be honest, living in a true democracy would be maddening, because we would always be voting on something. We elect representatives, senators, and a president/vice-president to do the job that would most benefit us.

There were quite a few people who were in favor of the Bank of the United States. But Jackson interpreted his re-election in 1832 to mean that the people wanted him to kill the BUS. There were also a significant number of people who may have been in favor of the BUS and just trusted Jackson to do what he thought best.

Should we celebrate him? Sure. He expanded the power of the Office of the President, and kept the Union from dissolving in the early 1830s, among a number of other acts we can be proud of. Can we be embarrassed by him? Sure. The process of Indian Removal - while a very popular decision among white Americans - is one of the darkest periods in our country's history. I would prefer not to be embarrassed, and take the negative lessons he showed as a lesson to be better citizens in the future.

-James

Thanks, Mr. Yasko, for posting to our blog. I hope you will visit again and share your thoughts with us.

My view of Andrew Jackson is that it really doesn't matter whether we consider him democratic or autocratic. What matters to me is that he was an inspirational leader in both war and politics, so what can we learn from that today? Likewise, his views on slavery and Indian Removal were tragically wrong, even if they were shared by many in his time. So what can we learn from those experiences that will help guide us as we face issues in the 21st century? That is really what studying history is all about.

I really enjoyed reading your points of view on Andrew Jackson. Even though many had differing opinions on whether he was a good president or a president who led the country in the wrong direction, you used facts to back up your position. I also enjoyed watching the presentation from the Hermitage. It made history come to life! You have a teacher that guides you to learn in many different ways, which makes that learning far more interesting. Learning about Andrew Jackson, his imperfections and his strengths, can help us understand leadership in our country today. That truly is what studying history is all about.
