M. Albert said...

1 & 2. Lincoln of course takes us back to 1776, and the founding of the United States with the idea that "all men are created equal." Yet ever since the words were dry on the Declaration of Independence, the irony was that slavery exited in the land of the free. Lincoln reminds us that we are a nation not because we share a religion, or ethnicity, or even a language. We are a nation because we share the ideas in the Declaration of Independence, and we need to hold ourselves to those ideals. Interestingly, Lincoln had always rejected the idea that the United States had begun with the Constitution. That is important because the Constitution, unlike the Declaration of Independence, had acknowledged slavery.

3. Whether the US, or any country that valued freedom, could survive. In the world of 1863, there were many who thought that the only viable type of government was a tyranny or monarchy. After all, the democracies created in ancient times collapsed. And it seemed to many at the time, with the bloody Civil War, that our democracy might as well.

4. That we could honor the soldiers only be continuing to fight to maintain our nation, and to end slavery.

5. That if the Union lost the Civil War, it would prove to many that democracy was not a viable form of government.
