Civil War Soldiers

Although historians, teachers, and students concentrate mostly on the major battles of the Civil War, we can learn a great deal by studying smaller battles as well. The Battle of Rivers Bridge was fought in South Carolina on February 2-3, 1865.

First, read the Surviving on the Battlefield (Reading 1) to find out about Civil War tactics and specifically the Rivers Bridge. Then continue on to letters and reports about the battle and respond to the following questions:
Reading 2:
1. Compare the 2 casualty reports. Why do you think the number of Union casualties was twice the number of Confederate casualties?
2. Compare the number of Confederate casualties estimated by the Union commander compared to the number reported by the Confederate commander. Why do you think accounted for the discrepancy?
Reading 3:
1. Read the memoirs of Sgt. Moore and Captain Wilson. Both reported about the medical treatment received by wounded soldiers during the battle. Describe the medical services given to the Union and Confederate wounded as reported in the two accounts.
2. Read Mrs. Cherry's letter. What was her purpose in writing it?

)i think there were more union casualties because confederate army had a better tactic than the union soldiers.

2)they wanted to look good and make it so they made it seem as though they(both armies)were winning also it would be hard to count all the casualties so i guess they just made an estimate.
3)they were left to die.

1. The union weren't as organized as the confederates. Perhaps people got cold feet and ran for it but never survived. It's also possibe that they were just not well trained for this sort of event.

2. The union may have just exagerated in their numbers to make it seem that they're winning.

The confederates used actual medicine to ease the pain but the patient refused.

Mr. Albert responds:
1. In the Civil War having a defensive position was clearly an advantage. The Confederates were dug in along a road and with high ground. Both of those caused more casualties among the advancing and attacking Union troops.
2. Finding out what happened in a battle can be confusing because oftentimes primary sources disagree, as they do here. It was easy for the Union commander to get reports that counted some rebel casualties more than once, and Confederates that the Union troops thought were shot might not have been. The Union commander has no way of knowing what went on behind the Confederate lines or in Confederate hospitals.
1. The Union had much better medical services, although the South did the best with what limited supplies it had.
2. Mrs. Cherry wanted a pension due to her husband's war injuries.
