Pioneer Travel Tips

Captain Randolph Marcy was a cavalry officer in the US Army who wrote "The Prairie Traveler" in 1859 to help settlers make it safely to the West.

Your assignment:
1. Find 5 bits of advice that Captain Marcy gives travelers, put them into your own words so that a modern traveler could understand them.
2. Would any of the advice given by Captain Marcy in 1859 apply for travelers today? Why or why not?

Be sure to post your class period and first names/last initial so that you get credit. Example: "P5 Jack A & Jill B"

p.s. Follow the link to see the actual text of Captain Marcy's book, "The Prairie Traveler"

1) He said that to be very cautious when liting a fire and to beread with blankets incase flame spreads in unwanted areas.

2)He also said that inner bark; dry trees; and dry grass can be good to use for fire.

3) He said that the most difficult method on making fire is by rubbung two pieces of wood togther, and before you try doing this method you would need lots of practice.

4) When no dry place is found to start fire then you can use a kettle or a frying-pan, and after you started the fire you move it to the ground.

5) The most simple method is by using locifer matches, but they can only be used if they are in well-corked bottles because then it can get wet!

Question 2) These methodds can still be used today because there are many travelers who still use these methods to start or even prevent fire till this day!

1. The hardest method to make a fire, that some indians use, however, is to cause heat between two pieces of wood, but this method is difficult and takes lots of practice.

2. I have seen indians make a fire by using only metal and rock. Yet others cannot even do it with a match.

3. The simplest way to start a fire is by using a lucifer match. However if they are kept wet, they will fail to make a fire.

4. Travelers should know that it is highly important to know different methods that may be used for making fires, in case their method does not work.

5. Inexperienced travelers may have trouble with their fire, for the grass may catch fire, also. It must be secluded. In case the grass does ignite, men should stand around it, with blankets, ready to put it out.

I do not think travelers now should use Captain Marcy's advice, because now we travel by car, airplane, train, and bus. They should, however, use his advice if they intend to travel by wagon.

2.When the streams rise and flood take caution of quicksand.
3.When stuck in quicksand lift out with a rope.
4.Walk quickly on quick sand and try to detect safe ground.
5.Examine the quicksand first.

... Would any of the advice given by Captain Marcy in 1859 apply for travelers today? Why or why not?
I think it does apply to travlers today because quicksand is still around. Also most of the things he talks about are still around.

1. Organization of Companies-They should group themselves and find a leader for their groups. They should do this to be well organized and to know where and with who they belong.
-Up to 70 men must be armed and equipped properly to be able to use it as protection against the indians.
-The leader must have good control of his orders and of his companies inorder to have harmony in the association.
- All members should have a duty or job assigned inorder protect eachother.
- In order to supply those who might die out on the road they must raise a fund to provide themselves with extra animals.

2.Prabably most of the advice given by Captain Marcy wouldnt help modern travelers. It wouldnt help them due to the fact that everythi is more advanced now. As an example travelers no longer have wagons to transport themselves and their luggage.

1.You could swim across the river.

2.Substitute a boat with your wagon-beds.

3.Float across with barrels

1) A man on foot should take a number of sharp objects to check if the ground is quicksand before anyone steps on it.
2) There's no danger if you walk over quicksand as long as you walk at a fast pace.
3) If a horse is traveling, it shouldnt stand still in the stream. Give the horses water before traveling.
4) Wagons must be driven steadily across or else the wheels will sink in the quicksand.
5) Mules lay down when they're scared while on the quicksand. When this happens drag the mule out with ropes.

The advice would apply to travelers today because quicksand is still in some places & travelers may come across it.

" Fuel AND Fire " - Pieces Of Advice
1.) Digging a trench and starting a fire in the bottom and then cooking everything on top over the trench.
2.)Taking Lucifer Matches And storing them in a well corked bottle to avoid them getting wet and not working.
3.) Another way to start a fire which is easy but takes practice to get it just right is the use of friction on two pieces of wood.
4.) Dry Grass And Leaves can also be used to make a fire, using kindling fuel and placing a spark by using flint and steel.
5.) People who don't have much practice or knowledge on starting fires should just set the grass around them on fire , this should be used with precaution incase the fire gets too large and burns more than intended.

Part 2 :
Yes this advice could still be used even though it is old practices , they could still work and its helpful to know all this just incase.

1a. Put hartshorn on the bite and drink in small amounts diluted in water helps to fight fatigue and prevents unconsciousness.
1b. A ligature should be tied above the wound and cut the wound with a knife and suck out the poison and spit it out.
1c. Make a small cut into a chicken's chest and apply the cut to the wound and if the chicken dies use another chicken until the chickens stop dying.
1d. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake drink a bottle of whiskey and apply indigo plant material to the wound to heal the wound.
1e. Drink a very strong spirit until you become very drunk, which is large amount, and instead of the poison affecting you, it counteracts the intoxication.

2.The advice wouldn't apply for travelers today because most people travel by airplane not by road as much.

Advice: Captain Marcy was a wise man. He gave alot of advice about survival. These are just a few examples:

1.) It is very important for the travelers to know the different techniques that may be needed to create a fire while they are traveling.

2.)Fuel may be saved by digging a hole two feet deep and eight inches wide. It helps the fire from going out when the wind blows.

3.) the most easiest way to start a fire will be by using matches, but the matches had to be secured in a bottle or a dry place.

4.) Another method is to use gun powder. A wet towel is rubbed with gun powder and dry gun powder is then sprinkled ontop of the moist powder. It is then ignited.

5.) Another way is to use Buffalo dung . You then surround it with dry material that is flable.

Question 2: Advice from 1859 may still work now. It may be helpful advice for travelers that are lost. Advice that may never seice to help.

Since there wasn't any fuel to the roate of California the pioneers had to use buffalo droppings which was a good fuel for fire when dry.

A better way to save fuel for Fire,is to dig a hole that is 2 feet long by 8 inches in depth and width, this will help to save more fuel and use less fuel, during windy weather.

The easier way to light a fire was to use lucifer matches, but if it wasn't kept dry in a bottle it will get wet and will not light up.

The Indians will start there fires by using steel and fire after others got frusterated with the matches they couldn't light.

A very hard method that rquires a lot of practice is to do the way of the Western Indians, by using just two sticks to make a fire.

1. RATTLESNAKE BITES

When the victim becomes faint or exhauste mix water and hartshorn to the wound. Apply the water when it is drunk in small quantities.

String or ligature should be bound firmly on the bite. Then cut deeply with a knife. Then suck out the poison and spit out the saliva.

Its good to carry an antidote in case you get bitten by a rattlesnake.

Place a small cut on the chicken's chest and put the cut on the wound and if the chicken dies do it to other chickens until it stops dying.

Drink whisky and apply indigo poultice and three days later you will recover but you will have to slough the flesh around the wound away.

2. Yes it will apply because if your out traveling and a rattlesnake bites you, you will know how to heal yourself to not die from the venomous poison.

1. In windy weather make a trench about 2 feet long and 8 inches in width and hight to make the fire inside the trench.
2. You can make a fire by using a lucifer matches but they are likely to get wet, you can also star a fire with flint and steel.
3. There are other ways to start a fire, one of these ways is by gathering the inner part of a tree or dry grass and lighting the center of the dry grass or tree.
4. When it is raining, you should start the fire in the driest place possible and cover it with a blanket so the rain won't extinguish it or if there isn't a dry spot you can light in a pan or kettle.
5. When the other methods aren't successful, you could use a gun to light a ire by damping a rag with powder and shoot to ignite.

1.
* For windy weather dig a 2 foot trench and make a fire at the bottom and put cooking utensils up on top to recieve all the heat.

*Lucifer matches to start a fire should be kept in a corcked bottleso they wont get wet and damaged.

*Flint and steel are also two good tools to start a fire.

*Dry grass and dry leaves which are found in the inner bark of some dry trees can also start a fire if you: wet a rag with fuel and rub it with powder, and a spark struck into it with a flint and steel which will turn it on place it on inflamable material and keep it dry with a blanket over the top of it.

* Be careful not to burn the area around the campfire, it could end up very disastrous.

2. Yes and no,no because there have been new inventions like grills, which are used to cook food.
Yes because some people go on trips to the wilderness and sometimes end up getting lost,if your risk is getting lost why not just learn these things to keep dangerous animals away and atract people.

Thomas Jefferson was trying to say that the business between slave trading and white men was a growing matter of something bad. Slavery is wrong for both the slaves and the slave owners, because eventually the slave owners, even if they were nice to their slaves, would become mean and petty. He is scared for his country when he remembers that God is equal to everyone, and His justice must be realized soon. The point he is trying to make, in general, that slavery is very wrong, and that we should treat everyone the same.
I agree with his two ideas because slavery is wrong, and also that everyone is equal in spite of their ethnicity. He was also right when he said that even if you were a very nice slave owner, soon you would go around being mean to people because you give threatening orders to your slaves.
