Thomas Jefferson on Slavery

"The whole commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the...most unremitting despotism on the one part, and degrading submissions on the other.....Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever."

--Thomas Jefferson, "Notes on the State of Virginia, 1782

1. In your own words, what are the two points that Jefferson is making about slavery?

2. Do you agree or disagree with his two ideas? Why?

1) He was trying to say that slavery was wrong for the slaves and the masters and that everyone should be equal. It was bad for the masters because then they would treat everyone in a rude way.

2) We agree because slavery isn't fair and everyone should be treated equally.

Thomas Jefferson says that slavery owners threaten the slaves to keep them working with their owner or else they will have a punishment or be killed a.ka. murdered or be returned if possible and replace them with other slaves. Slave owners are evil cold hearted to their salves even though the slave owners are nice to other people then they must or may treat with non respect. If you brake a rule god will or might punish yu for your sins or what pain or damaged you caused.

1,He's stating that slavery is wrong and we should have been equal people. Also it was bad for the masters because the way they treated the slaves is the way that they are going to be treated and it was bad for slaves because they have to do everything and they didn't have a choice.
2. We agree because we should have treated them like the way we wanted to be treated.

we agree with this quote because if one person or the owner of the slaves is really mean to a slave imagine how they are with other people they become mean with everybody else and sometimes it gets you in trouble.

1.) One of his points is that slavery is not right and is unnecessary and never ending unless we stop it right now so it should be stopped. Another is that God believes in fairness, in what is right and slavery is not right, so he is scared for the punishment that God is going to give them.

2.) I agree with his Ideas because I believe that all men were created equal and no one should be forced to do something they don't want to do.

1.One of his points is that owning a slave is evil and disgraceful and the other is that god is fair and you will get what you deserve evantually.
2. I agrre becuase what i was taught was every man is equal and i respect what Martin Luther King jr was saying and everything he said just sank in and i understood. I could never own a human being

Jefferson said that slavery is bad for both the master and the slave. It's bad for the master because God is just. The master will pay for the things he's done to his slaves. We agree with what Thomas Jefferson said because people dont have the right to own other people.

Two points that Jefferson is making about slavery are that the masters are mean to the slaves and of they are not careful it might rub off on there children.

I agree because it is true no human should be treated that way and children usually do what there parents do.

1. Slavery is bad for the masters because they treat slaves cruely and their characters get use to the cruelty which makes them cruel to everyone.

The other point is that the slaves lose self respect and just become scared of everyone.

2. We agree with Thomas Jefferson because we think slavery is bad and he made good points about the emotional effects of it. Especially the part where the masters become bitter.

Owning a slave not only hurts the slave but also the slave owner . Also how can someone be mean without becoming mean also God is going to punish everyone .
I do agree because he is actually saying what is true about the slave owners .

1). The two points of Jefferson of slavery is that the masters take advantage of their power and use violence and threats on slaves in order to make them work. Ofcourse, its bad for the slaves but its also bad for the masters. That's the second point, all that roughness, violence, and meaness thats inside of them will eventually rub off on the people around them like their children anf family relatives.

2). I agree with Jefferson's two ideas because it is true that the masters roughness will spread on others.

Slavery is just a pontless, neverending cycle of cruel power over a person and a shameful life for the slave. He feared for the country and nation when he sees and knows that god is fair, and that those actions would not go unpunished forever.

We do agree with his ideas. Slavery is bad and no person deserved to be submitted into the shameful horroble life that a slave lived. The hardship and pain and unfairness that they suffered.

1. The first point is that the slave-owners treat the slaves with with a mean character and it becomes a habit for the slave-owner to be mean.
The second point is that the slave loses seif-respect because they live in rags and beat-down shacks.
2. I agree with him because if you think about it a slave owner will eventualy turn bitter and the slave will never be able to leave the life he leads.

1. I believe that Jefferson is trying to say is that slavery is bad and not just bad for the slaves but for their masters, too. The slave will have to do hardlabor untill they die. With the masters they might threaten or beat there slaves and they might have that hate at home too. They might influence their hate on their chilren as well.
2. I agree with Jefferson because I don't every want slavery to ever happen again. It horrible to think what happen back then.

1. In your own words, what are the two points that Jefferson is making about slavery?
Thomas meant that it is not fair. Even if the masters are not hitting them and the threat is still there and the masters children and family watch hat are the masters are doing. Also that he ment that he trembles for the country because god said evreyone is equal and that god will punish them the country.

2. Do you agree or disagree with his two ideas? Why?
We can not say we agree or disagree. Thomas sounded he was in denial. So we realy dont agree or desaggree.

1) The fact that the masters are getting worse doesn't help their family. By the masters hurting and torturing slaves the children's future is clear. How can a person be mean to one and not be mean to the other? The second was that god is always just and will forever be just.
2) I disagree

Slavery is just a never ending pointless cycle of cruel power. Slavery is bad for the slave according to Thomas Jefferson. Slavery doesn't help the slave or the owner because the slaves' mental and physical health are at risk and the owners are influencing their kids cruelty

I agree, because slaves do get abused by their masters and its going to get into kids mind that its ok to do this.

Jefferson makes the point that slavery was as bad for the slave holder as it was for the enslaved person. Jefferson knew first hand the brutality and inhumanity that accompanied each aspect of slavery, and correctly said that it rubbed off on the slave owner. As far as a punishment for slavery, was Jefferson anticipating the Civil War?

While I agree that slavery was bad for everyone associated with it, I think that Jefferson misses one thing here: the slave holders had a choice, even though they didn't believe it at the time, while the enslaved people had no such choice.
