Soldier Letter from the Mexico-USA War

Click on the link to a letter  from a soldier in the Mexico-USA War published in the periodical "Yankee Doodle."  As you read the letter, respond to these 4 questions:

1. In the first paragraph, what did the writer expect from going to war?
2. In the second paragraph, what did the writer find instead?
3. In the third paragraph, what advice would the writer expect from his mother, and what did he think of that advice?

1. it is not going to be a fun trip to mexico. he thought it was going to be great looking at the sites but wen war started his thoughts changed.

2. he found lots of violence and people get physically hurt.

3. The advice wouldn't help him in the battels he is fighting , but to still remember to thing of god all time fighting .

4. the battle was going to begin nextweek. they were going to execute the mexicans.

1. In the war, the writer expected to see nice things, like sunny skies, and rare things, and fruit.

2. In reality the writer did not see these things, but he saw people screaming, in pain, and suffering.

3. The adivse that the mother gave them was that why read the bible if everything they did was the opposite of what it said and he thought that if he wanted to be a good soldier that not to request him to read the bible.

4. They were going to kill Mexicans the following week, and he feels sorry for them, because he promises to kill half a dozen.

(1) The solider thought Mexico was going to be a nice sunny place with exotic fruits. So he probably thought the war was not going to be a big problem.
(2) It was not has he thought is was going to be. He explained it as "a butchery" They were disecting Mexicans since they were at war.
(3) The solider mother told him to read the bible. He said what was the point of reading the bible were he has to be fighting the whole time for his country and life. He also said why pray for those he is going to kill next.
(4)The American war was going to be an invasion. He said he will try his best to run his sword into a half dozen Mexicans.

#2 he says its not fun its very sad to kill and hear there scream.
#3 he things that what his doing is wrong.he things that why he prays if in the next minute he will have to kill them.

The writer expected from going to war would be an adventure.

The writer found instead was a living nightmare and was not fun to kill other people.

The advice was that to pray and read the bible for god could help him win the war.

2. He found stirring music and fine dresses and pass with other butchery.

3. The advise he would expect was pray for his enemies but he should feel hate for them but his mother's advise is to pray for them.

He found that he had to kill people to win even tought they would win he still had to take people's lifes, he found out that it was very brutal.

1. The writer thought that war was an going to be a place full of fine dresses and tropical fruits and rare sitings of an unseen world.

2. He found that war was no wonderland and that he took no joy in cutting throats and that even his platoon, a rough looking group, seemed as if they were afraid of dying in war.

3. The writer didn't want to read the Bible because what he was reading and what he was doing were not at one.

4. The writer was going to start an invasion and he hoped to kill one dozen soilders.

5. What suprised us was that the mother told the writer to read the Bible even though what he was doing was against what he was reading.

1. The writer expected the war to be somehow interesting and probaly not as bad as it was.
2. He found the war to be devastating and horrid since his job was to kill many people and that there is no fun in cutting throats.
3. He would expect his mother to tell him something useful. His mother advised him to read the bible and to pray for the people he were to kill.His job was to kill and he could not do so if he had to pra, his spirit in the bible and in killing did not make one together.
4. There was going to be a brush and he was going to run his sword into 6 Mexicans at at time and would blow out the brains of the jubilating simpletons.
5. What suprised us about the letter is that the writer would actually expect the war to be delightful and that he would have fun and enjoy the fact that he would be killing many Mexicans.

1.He expected it to be a horrible, but there were trees and rare fruits. Also how he dislikes the war.
2. He found that it is horrible and devastating.
3.He expected to be something useful but instead she told him to read the bible and he thinks that its useless to read it if he is about to kill someone in a few minutes.
4.He is being send into battle thinking that he will kill a dozen Mexican soldiers and how he doesn't really want to.
5. What surprised me was that he didn't have a rush of having the urge of killing them all and making it out alive, and not accepting fate to come to his mind.

1. He thought it was going to b e horrible, but he liked the trees and the fruit in Mexico.

2. He liked the music and the clothes but he hated killing people and seeing his conrads hurt or dying.

3. He expected her advice to be worse than him been thrown away,instead of her giving him advice she told him to read the bible.He said it would be useless to follow her advice.

1.He expected it to be like the war his dad fought in revolutionary war. His dad expressed the war as a glorious thing and what he had been experincing was not that glorious feeling.

2.He thought he was gonna have a good time but instead he found that he had to slit throats.He didnt like it because he didnt like the people screaming in agony!

3.His mother told him useless advice to"have good will among men", he found it lousy because what he's doing is not really a good thing

5.what surprised me the most was that he did not enjoy cutting the peoples head off.I expected him to talk about how he was doing and how he was feeling,and we expected his name to be written in the letter.

1. He expected that there was going to be a good day in Mexico and lots of fruit

2. He hears their cries of agony and their bowels coming out.

3. He obliged his mother's advise but its useless to him because here is no point of rading the bible when there are bayonets and swords in the midst.

1. A person is writting to his father, saying that he does not enjoy being in the war but he wants to bring glory to his dad and his family.

2. In the second paragraph, the writter feels irritated and can't stand to kill others, he finds himself shuddering to the sound of people in agony and the cries of the defenseles.

3. In the third paragraph, what advice would the writer expect from his mother, and what did he think of that advice?He expects his mother too tell him too read the bible,and pray for the people who he is killing.The writer thinks that its not true because he isnt doing what the bible is telling him to do,he is doing the opposite.

4. In the next paragraph the writer is talking about how they called him out too go fight,and he will now have to murder Mexicans.

5.What we found surprising was the fact that he didn't want to fight in the us army.I expected him to not fight and go back home.

2. The writer found animals, he would kill them in the same fashion he would if he was fighting.
