Revolutionary Women

Women played a key role in helping America win the Revolutionary War. Women boycotted British goods, made bullets and uniforms for the army, became spies for General Washington, and even fought in battles, besides keeping farms and homes running.

Four of the most famous revolutionary women are Abigail Adams, Deborah Sampson, Mercy Otis Warren, and Phyllis Wheatly.

Your assignment is to write a persuasive paragraph about the woman assigned to you and your partner, telling:
1. What contributions did she make to the cause of American independence?
2. Why is it important that 8th graders study her? What can they learn from her life and deeds?

Mr Albert you should let us know about deorah sampson because she was the only women to fight in the revolutionary war. She dressed as a man to help our country for freedom. She did all she could to not her identity be revele, she was even her own doctor. So you should really tell us more about her to let us know that women did more than what was expected of them.

Abigail Adams was only known as John Adams' wife, but no one knows about her and what she believed in. For Example, she talked to John Adams about womens' rights. She said that it was a little strange if he could not understand that half the population was not free. And women weren't really free. They were ruled by their fathers or husbands. They could not vote. They had no representation. We can learn many things from her, for example in 1791 a free black youth came to her house to be taught how to read and write. She placed him in an evening school. She is important because she helped fight for womens' rights and did not believe in slavery.

Deborah Sampson was a very inportant woman because she was the the only woman to fight in the Revolutionary War. When Deborah enlisted herself to go to the army she disguised a as a man because the army didn't take in females so she had to disguise herself. When Deborah went into war she got wounded but she didn't give up in fighting for her country and that's why she is remembered today. She never wanted to be found out and did everything she could have done for America's Revolutionary War. That's why there is a statue of her out in a public library in Massachusetts.

She was a African American who was a slave and wrote poems such as "To the King's Mos Exellent Majesty" . She also wrote a lots of interesting poems about the American independence. She was a lady who fought for her liberty to have her poems to be published. Eight graders should learn about her because she was a smart slave who knew how to write and read.it was amazin that she could read and write because almost people who were slave never knew how to read and write. She also had her poems published in a newspaper.THE END

Phyllis Wheatley was a slave who got her poetry published. Though people thought her poems were okay, white people still thought black people were dumb. We can learn from her because even though people thought her race wasn't as smart as white people, she didn't stop writing. This is important because she was a black woman, and in those times men didn't care about what women had to say or write, especially black women. So if she would've stopped writing black women, and maybe even all women, would not have a say in the world and wouldn't be able to express themselves through poetry or anything else.

Abigail Adams wrote many letters to her husband, John Adams, about women's rights. She thought that women also had a right to freedom, but she felt that women were not really free because they were either ruled by their husbands or fathers. She also thought that slavery was evil and that it should come to an end. Nobody knows about Abigail Adams but we should know about her because she is also important. We should know about her because she helped in the revolutionary war, she gave lot of political advice to her husband John Adams.

Phillis Wheatly had many achievments like her poems. One of her poems was dedicated to George Washinton and said that he was one of the forefahers of America. From Wheatly we can learn from her poems because she writes about the king and other important things such as the government. 8th graders should learn about Wheatley because during that time people didn't care about slaves and Wheatley wasn't treated well in America because of her color. No American publisher was willing to print her book of poems so she had to go with her friends in England where black authors were more than welcomed. Lastly, Even though she was black she made an effort to publish and print her book of poems.

Many women were part of the American Revolution. Out of those many women was Deborah Sampson. Not many people have heard of her,but she was a great contribute in helping the war. She is very impotant. Women in those times were never allowed to fight in battles. She felt like she had to be a part of the war so she disguised herself as a man. That's what make her amazing. She knew anything could happen to her,but she still risked her life for it. Some women and men would have thought this was crazy because women were suppose to stay at home and take care of their children and household. For Sampson it was easy to disguise herself because she was tall and well educated to pass as a man.During battle she was wounded several times yet she still fought in the wars. She is special because though not many men would have thought as smart she did what she believed in. In the Declaration of Independence it say that everyone is free, that they were allowed to believe in what they wanted. So Debarah believed that women should as we;l contributed in the war as the men did. She fought for her country, with many pride, many risk ,and the thoughts of what other people because she did what she believed in.Anna Marie Lane,to disguise herself as a man did this as well because of what she believed.Everyone should learn about her because she showed that men and women should be equal because women can do same things men can do with the same or more persitance. She is a great women that followed her thoughts, actions, and choices. She was important like many other women in the war.

When we talk about the American Revolution we don't think about women , but they were their. For example Deborah Sampson, she was one of those women that felt they needed to be part of the war , and making gunpowder just wasn't enough. So in 1778 she decided to enlist in the war , Sampson disguised her self as a man and sucesfully enlisted for a year and a half of service. I believe Sampson should be talked about in school more often because no women had done this before, and by hearing more about her it will inspire other women to fight for what the believe in.

2. She started the African-American literary tradition.

3. She started the African-American women's literary tradition.

4. Her use of meter and rhyme-scheme is precise and correct.

5. She combined the influences of religion and neo-classicism in her poems. and she got them published. We can learn why her pomes were hard to publish in America. The Americans did not accept black authors work. She was important because she was a slave and got her pomes published

Warren first started off by talking to her freinds about the war, then she had started having meetings in her home. The people that went to the meetings were very important people like John Adams, and George Whashington. Her meetings talked about womens the rigts that women didnt have . Warren was important because she made her voice heard even though she could not vote or be in political stuff like being in the goverment, she made women look better ,and more important . Even though this lady was not known she made a big difference how men would she women and how they would treat them.

Yet people didn't know about the women in the revolutionary war, they played a very importsnt role. Without the women being there, the americans would probably wouldn't know when the british were coming. Abigail fed the men, took care of them, was in the war with the men, helped out when they needed somebody. Abigail thought it was wrong to have slaves and that it was evil and a threat to the americans. Abigail was a church woman so she isn't evil. She was important to the revolutionary war.

Abigail Adams thought that slavery was wrong and they had no rights but she wasn't the only person to think it was wrong but her husband as well. She got her husbands attention about women's rights but was turned down. We learned that she was the only women who stood up for women's and the slave's rights. Abigail is important because she stood up for women's and slaves rights and it's important to stand up in what you believe and in what others and she did a favor for those who didn't speak for themselves.

Dear Obama,
You should include Sampson in the History books because she helped win the civil war. She impersonated a man in order to go into the Continental Army. She fought in the army, and loaded cannons. She did a lot of stuff that really contributed to the independence of the colonies from britain. She only impersonated a man because they would'nt allow women in the army. Without her history would'nt truly be complete. Putting her and of course all the other women that fought in the army because it teaches how times were at that period of time, also because they deseve recognition, and honor. Without her and all the other heroins, we would'nt have independence today, or maybe it would take longer.
