Seneca Falls Declaration

By basing the Seneca Falls Declaration (also known as the Declaration of Sentiments) on Thomas' Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her fellow reformers challenged the Nation to live up to its original creed.
1. Only 1/3 of the three hundred people at the convention signed the Declaration. Why do you think that the other 200 didn't sign? If you had been there, would you have signed? Why or Why not?
2. Re-read the next to last paragraph. What is the plan to gain equal rights? Is it a good plan? Why or why not?

Click on the link to the political cartoon drawn by Elizabeth M'Clintock, a supporter of women's suffrage.
1. What do you notice about the figures in the cartoon?
2. What do you think is the cartoonist's message? Explain your answer.

-The declaration of setiments was based on the decleration of independance.

-Some of the abuses in the declaration are: all MEN are created equaly.Woemen wanted the right to vote, to own property, and to have equal mariage laws.

-We think that 200 people did ot sign because,
they were sencond geussing their plans.

-We think that their plan was to have series of coventions. This does not seem like a goo plan for effective change.

Cartoon

The woeman are hunting, riding boats, leadung people into battle, giving speeches to large groups, inventing things, and adriving stage coachs.

-The cartoon the woemen are doing everything
that the men would ussualy do like hunting.

2. The plan to gain equal rights is to be treated the same. To be able to wear the same clothes and to vote. Yes it is a good plan because they should be able to vote.

1. What we notice is that the women got there rights. They got to work and read and all other stuff.

2. That the women could work and there not lazy. That they could work they could do the same as the men.

1)i think that the 200 people didnt sign because they disagreed or they just didnt care for the decleration.if i were there i probably would sign it because i would be known later in the future for signing it.

2)they wanted to use all their power to try to gain the equal rights.i think its a good plan because their doing whatever they can to gain their equal rights and also because they wanted to go after what they believe in.

3)this is showing how women are going to take over after they gain their rights.

1. I think that 200 people didn't sign at the convention because men didn't want women to have rights and eligible to vote work and go to school. If I should have been at the convention I what have signed because there is no good reason why they should not be treated the same as men.

2. The plan to gain equal rights was to employ agents, circulate tracts, petition the state and national Legislatures and, endeavor to enlist the pulpit and the press in our behalf. I think its a good plan because if they get agents and petition the state and national Legislatures etc. The press will have to listen if they start doing a petition.

1) because if they signed the public might hate them,No because of peer pressure for example if your best friend didn't sign they will tell you not to either.

3) They were mostly women in the drawings.

4) She was implying that women could do things that men could do,For example it showed a woman holding a gun ready to shoot that means she's hunting ,which people thought only men could do.

1.Perhaps they feared carcelation if they signed the declaration of sentiments Or maybe because women couldn't vote for their own rights.
2.their plan involves them sending petitions to the state of legislatures and to have press and pulpit on their side.yes because they want to use every bit what ever bit of power they have to give women more rights.

Cartoon:
1.The cartoon is mostly just about women fighting against other men and other women.Things that men should be doing they are doing such as hunting, killing animals.
2.Women can do what men can do and maybe also even better. All things might be happening because women don't have their rights and if they don't get their rights it might keep happening.

things including slavery will come to an end and others will start.

2. The plan has to do with constructing petitions, hiring agents, and putting a story in the press. It's a well thought in out plan but it will take a lot of funding to make this plan successful.

Political Cartoon

1. The women are accomplishing jobs that men would usually do.

2. The message of this cartoon is that women will probably replace the man's role and do stuff men do.

M. Albert said...

1. I suspect that there was a high price to pay for the men and women that signed the Seneca Falls Declaration. Most people did not agree with it at the time, and it's always hard to do the unpopular thing. I also wonder if some of the women's rights supporters though that the Declaration didn't go far enough, while others thought that it went too far.

2. The signers of the Seneca Falls Declaration said that they expected lies and insults, and they weren't disappointed. The said that they were going to pursue their goals by changing laws in the state legislatures and Congress, and by support from religious leaders. I think that it was a good plan because it used different methods to reach their goals, so if one failed, another might work.

3 & 4. I was surprised that so many students misinterpreted the cartoon. Remember, it was drawn by a signer of the Seneca Falls Declaration, so that it was not an anti-women's rights cartoon. By showing women doing what were considered "men's activities," the artist not only shows that women can do anything, but also that they can do so while still remaining feminine.

Comment to Mr. Elias' post about Stanton and Anthony: I've always considered Stanton to have been the intellectual inspiration and driving force behind the 19th century women's movement, while Anthony was the public face and continued the struggle, dying only a few years before the 19th amendment give women the right to vote.
