Andersonville was built in 1864 to hold 10,000 Union prisoners of war. By the time the camp was closed 14 months later, over 45,000 prisoners were living there in squalid conditions, without enough food, water, shelter or medical attention. Over 13,000 Union prisoners died at Andersonville. Captain Henry Wirz, the commander at Andersonville, was hanged as a war criminal. The site is now a memorial to all prisoners of war from all US wars.
Although Captain Wirz was punished for what happened, there are those who think that he was a victim as well. So now it's your turn. Think about what it means to take responsibility. Who was really responsible for what happened at Andersonville?

1. There is really no one that we can blame in particular, there are many people to blame especially the people who started the war because if they didn't start the war, Andersonville would not have even existed and nobody would have died by people who destroyed the suplies to end the war quicker and Jefferson Davis not having enough suplies to feed the prisoners.

I think the one who was responsible for what happened in Andersinville is mainly Jefferson Davis.Because since he is the president of the Confederate states he could have put a stop what was going o in the country or the states. But also te Southern People ,because they had started the cival war.And Captain Wirz also for requesting so much food and supplies. And General Sherman because his army destroyed food and transport .So each have the blame only in small parts.

1. We think General Sherman is to blame for this because of his actions in destroying all the food and transports when he should have saved them so Andersonville can stop more deaths.
2. Why the others weren't envolved were that it wasn't there fault that the other people or prisoners died because they didn't destroy there transportation of food and shelter.

1)Jefferson Davis is the blame for this because he didn't get supplies for his on country. He couldn't get any supplies because the union stopped the transportation so they can't get food.

1. We think that the southern people had to get blamed because Jefferson Davis couldn't help cause he had no supplies. General Sherman was trying to end the war faster. General Grant tried to end the war faster and protect the black soldiers. General Wirz asked for supplies but there was none. So if the war never started all the deaths wouldn't happened thats why i blame the southern people.
Period 3 Veronica Leiva And Anais Orozco
We think that General Sherman was responsible for all the prisoners that died in Andersonville. He was the one who believed in "Total War", and destroyed all food, homes, and transportation, everything that belonged to the Southereners. If he had not destroyed all of these things, then the Andersonville prisoners would have had something to eat, and that was a problem there at Andersonville. Most soldiers didn't have anything to eat, they didn't have money to pay for it, they just didn't have any supplies, due to the fact that Gerneral Sherman and his soldiers destroyed food, transportation, etc., etc.

The person who is the most responsible is The SOUTHERN PEOPLE. Why? We say that the Southern People are responsible for the Civil War because they are the ones who started it! They wanted to keep slavery, they wanted the slaves to be in the north and the south. The southern states started seciding from the north. If they wouldnt have done that, evreyting would be a diffrent story.

President Jefferson Davis was to blame because he was the one who started the war with the north and he was the one picking the generals for the war to command the soldiers.
Jasmin H. & Alexandra G. P.6
We think Jefferson Davis was responsible. He was responsible because he was at the top, he decided to begin the war, he decided how his side fought the war, and everything about it. If Jefferson Davis would have really wanted to he could have ended the war, he could have commanded to retreat. He knew the prisoners were in a place that was not livable, so he could have just released them.
1. I think that the one to blame is Jefferson Davis because he has control over the leftover plantations in the south and he could have at least spared a portion of them to the camps so they could survive with the food.
Christian C. Stephanie C. P.6
In our opinion, we feel that Jefferson Davis is the most responsible for what occured in Andersonville,we think so because he was the president and he should've at least known what was going on with his war prisoners and should have helped them be in better circumstances;after all they are human.
Michael B. & Misael G. P.6
1. We think Captain Wirz is to blame for the deaths at Anersonville. Though he might have asked for more supplies, he didn't take it further. The soilders did not have as many supplies as the prisoners. He might have asked for supplies for the guards but why not for the prisoners as well.
Nathalie G. & Jasmin R. Period 6
We think that the person/group responsible for what happened at Andersonville was General Grant's because he had ended he exchanges for prisoners and that made prisoners go to camp where only one main person (leader) was undercontrol.
Muriel P. and Stephanny S. period 6
I think they all had a contribute to this, but Jefferson Davis is to blame more than the others becuase even though he has alot to take care of he could have had other people to help him take care of different assignments. This would help avoid a predicament.
Alexander M. Cynthia G. Per.6
We think that the person who was actually responsible for Andersonville was not Captain Wirz, but it was really General Sherman because he and his army were the ones to destroy the food and transport in the South which was really the reason that Captain Wirz never received the extra food and medicine along with shelter n which he constantly requested for.

We believe that General Sherman was responsible for the what happened in Andersonville. He had gone on a total rampage as he ore through the South. He took the resources from the south, (or the rest of the resources they had left.)

We blame General Grant because he ended prisoner exchange and that made the food supplies harder to obtain since there were more people to feed.
Nancy C. & Michael N. p6
In the end, or in this case begginning, we think that the Southern people should be the one to be blame. The southern had the chance to stay in the Union but, no, they left. If the southern states stayed there will still could have been supplies, freedom, peace, and no blood on both countries. So what if they didn't like leaving their slaves, they're big enough not to cry. They have to step up for themselves and not be so lazy. They have better chances in resolving this situation without fight. General Wirz actually tried to get some supplies but he was rejected. And so it all comes back to the southern.

We blame Jefferson Davis because he could have stopped it and let all the prisoners because he was the president of THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. His cabinet or secretaries could've gave him some tips and tell him about Andersonville. He could've bought food and all the other supplies that the camp lacked of. He could've done something at least to improve the camp.
