Lincoln campaigned against Stephen Douglas for the US Senate seat from Illinois in 1858. Although he lost the election, Lincoln became a national figure in the fight against slavery. Here are three of his most famous quotes from that campaign. Put the quotes in your own words:

Taken together, Lincoln is saying that slavery was wrong, and it was doomed to the "dustbin" of history. It is a perversion of democracy to say that people should have the "freedom" to own someone else, but that was what Douglas was saying. And in his "House Divided Speech," Lincoln clearly is saying slavery was on the way out.
